Turtles are reptiles. This order is over 220 million years old. Turtles can live in the sea and on land, in salt and fresh water.
The exact origin of turtles is unknown to science; however, their ancestors had strong shell as long as 200 million years ago. The largest fossil turtle was more than 4 m long and weighed around 2 tons. Nowadays turtles are smaller, with a shell reaching up to 2 meters, and weigh up to 900 kg.
These animals are featured by a small streamlined head that can be hidden inside the shell in case of danger. A short tail can also be hidden in the shell. Turtles reproduce by laying eggs and burying them in the sand.
Although turtle’s brain is small, constituting as much as 0.1% of body weight, these animals have color vision and are intelligent. Turtles are one of the most loved pets, especially by children. Providing proper care, turtles can live up to 40 years even in apartments.
